There is a reason why Agatha Christie (The Queen of Mystery!), who wrote more than a century ago, is the second highest-selling author to date, after Shakespeare. Google it if you don’t believe me, I insist! And when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle decided to kill off his character Sherlock in the “Final Problem” in 1893, what happened? People were absolutely enraged which led to a mass-outcry against Sherlock’s death. The author was forced to resurrect him, against his wish, if I may add. We, as humans are obsessed with mystery more than we’re ready to admit. The crime, the psychology involved, the whole procedure, the mind games, the hits & misses, and finally the big reveal! This whole journey is just too titillating. We can’t deny that, can we?

1. Big Little Lies

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern…well, I could go on with the stellar cast list. But that may spoil certain surprise entries. I guess I made my point. However, the brilliant cast ensemble is not the only reason why Big Little Lies is one of the best mystery thrillers you will find on OTT. Creator David E. Kelly and his entire team of writers made sure that you can’t stop once you’ve started watching! The narrative, the sub-plots, the complex characters, everything flawlessly works to keep you hooked.
The main story revolves around a group of high-class mothers of students at an elementary school in a beach town in California. Everything and everyone’s life seems just perfect until one day a new woman enters their lives with his little child and a murder follows! One of the highest-rated mystery webseries that also has copious amounts of drama. Go tune in now, and I bet you won’t stop!

2. Broadchurch

If you’re particularly a fan of British crime series, you will thoroughly enjoy this one. And if you haven’t watched Brit series enough, Broadchurch is the way to start! This 2013 David Tennant Olivia Coleman starrer crime thriller has been every mystery lover’s favourite and for all the right reasons.
A young boy gets murdered in a calm coastal town and a series of secrets start to unravel. The chemistry between Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Coleman) simply makes it a perfect watch. Alec is brooding ‘rough around the edges’ whereas Ellie is emotional, honest yet tough. Their conflicting ideals are especially interesting to watch. It’s a procedural crime thriller that also has a “whodunnit” twist.
Seasons: Three
Where to watch: Apple TV, Justwatch.com
3. Only Murders In The Building
Looking for some light-hearted crime-solving shows? With delightfully funny actors in the lead, Only Murders In The Building will make you fall in love instantly. Steve Martin and Martin Short have always been good actors, we know. But the real charming surprise was Selena Goméz! Imagine all three, together solving crimes! How adorable is that?
The plot is pretty simple. There is a murder in a New York City apartment building and every resident is a suspect. The first season starts out with the residents, which pans out to other characters as suspects in the following seasons. And these three characters Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Goméz) air a podcast about their investigation. The series is extremely fun to watch. Great punchlines, numerous LOL moments yet with tight investigative writing. In my opinion, it only gets better with every season with the perfect amount of twists & turns.
Seasons: Four
Where to watch: Disney+ Hotstar
4. Suzhal- The Vortex

Suzhal-The Vortex is a Tamil language crime series that tells a story with more layers than you’d realise. A small murder in a town in South India leads to multiple revelations on myriad levels. Creator duo Gayatri-Pushkar depicted the dark complexities of a society with a murder mystery approach. The final moments of the series are so engrossing and impactful that you will find it difficult to focus on anything else! The vibrant portrayal of the ‘Looting The Grave’ festival is dramatically equipped with sensational music and art. The aesthetics amidst a brutal crime-solving investigation leaves the audience in awe. A must-watch power-packed crime thriller series with social drama.

Inside Man has a very unique and quirky plot! Do watch the trailer and tell me you’re not intrigued! What makes any story click? If it can get your attention, it works. This Stephen Moffat-created British webseries has some unexpected turns of events. A prisoner (Jefferson Grieff) is on his death row while a woman (Janice Fife) is trapped in the cellar of a vicar. While you start watching this David Tennant starrer series, you keep asking yourself, “How are they going to get out of this”?
Well, watch it to find the answer! Although there is a strong chance you’d want a second season after watching this!

Winner of three Primetime Emmy Awards including Best Actress by Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown is one of those quintessential crime thrillers on OTT that does everything right. There is a murder of a girl in a small town in Pennsylvania called Easttown and Detective Sergeant Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) carries out the investigation with her exceptional skills.
Mare who has her own dark past and troubles in life is a delight to watch getting through all the hurdles. Released in the year 2021, Aranyak is a crime web series in Hindi with certain mythological elements too! Local cop Kasturi (Raveena Tandon) and a city-bred new cop Angad (Parambrata Chattopadhyay) together set out to get to the bottom of the crimes happening in a hill station. 8. Vadhandhi- The Fable Of Velonie

Writer-director Andrew Louis takes inspiration from Akira’s Rashomon and creates a masterpiece in the Tamil language called Vadhandhi- The Fable of Velonie. A girl dies mysteriously and a young cop is obsessed with finding the truth behind her death. But what is truth really? Isn’t everyone’s truth defined differently? Can there really be just one truth, or there are versions of truths perceived differently? That’s what Vivek (S.J. Suryah) tries to find out. Vadhandhi in Tamil means rumours.
The narrative is so powerful that you don’t realise that you’re being steered in a particular direction. And that direction keeps changing with every episode. The very premise of the story! Watch Vadhandhi for its phenomenal filmmaking and exceptional storytelling.
P.S. There are times when actor S.J. Suryah’s expressive eyes and body language reminded me of Irrfan Khan! That was my fave part!
Seasons: One (8 Episodes)
Where to watch: Prime Video
9. Wednesday

Don’t look shocked! There have been serious murderous crimes happening at this weird school and it would remain a mystery had it been not for Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega)! If fantasy crime is your genre, you probably have already watched it! So, for the rest of you, do give Wednesday a try. Nevermore Academy is a unique school where every student has some special ability, there are murders being committed. I assure you, once you’ve ‘entered’ this academy, you won’t be able to leave without wanting to know “whodunnit”! Alfred Gough and Miles Miller have created an exceptional series. Hard-hitting lines and technical brilliance, and the music…it’s just ‘hauntingly” wonderful!
Seasons: One (9 Episodes)

10. Kaalkoot

Kaalkoot is the name of a mythological poison that Lord Shiva consumed to protect the whole world. In this Hindi crime series, inspector Ravi Shankar Tripathi (Vijay Verma) deals with societal poison on a daily basis and swallows them all. There is no yelling of dialogues or in-your-face preachings in this series. Instead, there are subtlety, acting nuances carried out by some of the fine yet underrated actors of the industry. Yashpal Sharma, Seema Biswas, Gopal Dutt) and Shwetha Tripathi Sharma are some of them. There are silent moments that scream messages. Kaalkoot turned out to be quite a testament to refined filmmaking that Bollywood hasn’t seen in a while.
The basic story is about finding an acid attacker which eventually opens many cans of worms in the process. Please watch Kaalkoot for some meaningful cinema.
P.S. The poetry voiced by Timangshu Dhulia deserves a special mention!

11. The Undoing

Grace Fraser played by Nicole Kidman is a successful therapist in New York City with a loving husband (Hugh Grant) and a young son. Life couldn’t be more perfect for Grace until one day there is a brutal murder and her husband goes missing. This mini-series created by David E. Kelley has every necessary ingredient that keeps an audience glued to their screens. Unpredictable twists, secrets, the whole “did they, didn’t they” dance, you will love the characters one minute and hate them the next. A classic ‘whodunnit’ thriller/drama series you can’t afford to miss.

12. Dahaad

Women are murdered and found in public bathrooms. Another woman Sub-Inspector leads the investigation of this serial killer while fighting against social stigma on an everyday basis. SI Anjali Bhaati, (Sonakshi Sinha) is a badass, toughie and she doesn’t take s**t from anyone. Sonakshi was wonderful & Gulshan Deviah was quite plausible in his performance. And so was Vijay Verma! This procedural crime thriller series is fast-paced and the cat & mouse chase keeps you in a nail-biting mode till the end. Another round of kudos to the amazing writer-director duo Reema Kagti-Zoya Akhtar!
Seasons: One (8 Episodes)
Where to watch: Prime Video
13. Dhootha

Dhootha (The Messenger) falls somewhere between a murder mystery/supernatural/thriller category. I would rather not specify the genre as it may or may not work as a spoiler! There are mysterious deaths, suicides, and unexplained events and a journalist (Naga Chaitanya) is chasing the clues to get to the truth. Acting was the weakest aspect in the series, to be honest (except for Parvathy, she’s awesome). But the storyline, the pace, and the whole execution keep you glued to the end. So, go ahead and binge-watch this series over the coming weekend!
Seasons: One (8 Episodes)
14. The Valhalla Murders
Where to watch: Prime Video
A police investigator Arnar from Oslo is assigned the very first case of serial killing in Iceland. Officer Arnar assists Kata and together they unveil notorious truths which are just as cold and dark as the winters in Iceland. With the horrors of murdered boys and the series of unsavory incidents trailing one after another till the resolution, you need a strong stomach for this particular murder mystery series. Brilliant filmmaking with spine-chilling visuals only makes things a bit too realistic to watch sometimes. We recommend this series only if you can keep reality and fiction apart!
Seasons: One (8 Episodes)
Where to watch: Netflix
If you want tot take a break for murders and crimes, watch some feel-good movies to cheer yourself up
15. Homestay Murders

Finally a classic Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery from Tollywood. Homestay Murders is a murder mystery webseries in the Bengali language. The story is set in a North Bengal hill station where a group of strangers board at Ananya Homestay run by a young couple. Things start getting interesting when there is a murder. What follows is confrontation, questioning each other’s motives, suspecting…and then another murder. Director Sayantan Ghoshal succeeds in recreating the classic vibe while incorporating a fresh approach. Actors Arjun Chakraborty, Sohini Sarkar, Parno Mitra, and Sourav Das were quite convincing. Watch it over the weekend if you’re looking for some Bong mystery thriller series!

Good one.
I picked few from here to cover the next few weekends
Good list. Would love to add some. I took a couple of Hindi ones and 1 Tamil from it. I liked “murder in the hills” too from Tollywood.
Absolutely loved this. I am a murder mystery fan and have got so much new stuff here to watch even though I have devoured so many from the OTT. Thank you for this and loved the writing as always. Mentioning where we can watch them is really very helpful.
Some suggestions from me that I have recently watched – Shetland in BBC, Mahabharata murders in Hoichoi, and also Eken babu mysteries be it webseries or movies in Hoichoi
60% covered! Balance 40% will probably take two weeks!
Sssssoooo needed this information at one place!
